I GET IT! It's strange to me too! Nevertheless, an umbrella was the tool I had in my possession, back in 2008, that would meet a practical and a "right now" physical need of a total stranger, which in that moment, I had the resource to help, but God had to quickly adjusted my reluctant attitude before the red traffic light turned green.
BEYOND MY PRACTICAL REASON, AS STATED ABOVE, I give away umbrellas because, the way I see it, each part of the RED umbrella has spiritual significant or meaning. The RED umbrella is an overarching symbol of the LOVE God has for all of mankind, as our Good Shepherd. More information about this is written below and in the

The HOOK-SHAPED HANDLE of the RED [Gospel] Ministry Umbrella represents GOD'S STAFF or THE STAFF OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD. THE SHEPHERD'S STAFF is used to CARE for God's sheep by gently leading and guiding them safely home when they (you and I) wander off and away from the THE SHEPHERD'S Loving Care and Protection. Last, but not least, the beautiful showering RAIN represents more of GOD'S LOVE (perhaps GOD'S LOVING TEARS for the lost who haven't found their way back to Him) that has been shed abroad or within our hearts by the HOLY SPIRIT. The RAIN is also symbolic of GOD'S HOLY SPIRIT THAT HAS BEEN POUR OUT ON US AND EMPOWERS GOD'S PEOPLE and gives them ZEAL and PASSION to do the work of His Ministry. The Bible tells us that God pours out His Rain on the just and the unjust (the believer and the unbeliever, the righteous and the unrighteous, the saved and the lost). GOD DOES ALL THESE WONDERFUL THINGS AND SO MUCH MORE BECAUSE
HE "REIGNS or RULES" OVER EVERYTHING!
